JUNE 5-12, 2022

Our journey to Costa Rica begins in:

Oasis is fun, luxurious, sporty, easy, relaxed, unscripted, indulgent, balanced, adventurous

The Vacayans are hard at work planning each and every detail of this amazing resort vacation. We’ll have lots to share with you as everything comes together. You’ll find that information here.

We’ll also house an email archive on this page, too. This archive will feature all the trip-specific communications we have with you throughout your pre-resort experience with us. That way, if you happen to lose a general email somewhere along the way, you’ll be able to find it right here.

VACAYA’s mission is to give you everything you need with plenty of time to ensure a totally stress-free experience. Get ready for your vacaya!

Many people ask us “what will the VACAYA Oasis experience be like?” VACAYA Oasis is certainly more laid back than our large-ship cruises, perfect for those seeking fun, relaxation, adventure, and romance.

The VACAYA Oasis rhythm is… Relaxed. Easy. Fun. Balanced. Luxurious. Indulgent. Sporty. Unscripted. Adventurous.

As a VACAYA guest, discounts are available to you with various air carriers when booking your flights using our Group Codes/Links. Those codes/links, as well as the instructions for booking, can be found HERE.

The fabulous Andaz Beach House will certainly be a place you’ll want to hang out at with friends at least once or twice over the course of our week there. To get from the Resort to the Beach House, you’ll have two different options:

Option 1 – Boat Service
Boat Service runs from Sombrero Oscuro Beach (near the Resort) starting at 9:30am and continuing through 4pm. Please note that you WILL GET WET getting on/off the boat. Also, the Captain takes a lunch break daily from 12-1pm, so the boat doesn’t run during that time.

Option 2 – Shuttle Service
The Peninsula Papagayo Shuttle runs from the Lobby every half hour from 6am to 10pm daily.

Food and drinks are available at Andaz Beach House from 10am-5pm. In addition, there are paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel gear, cornhole, and giant Jenga there for your enjoyment. Towels, sunscreen, and bug spray are also readily available.

Getting an hour-long massage at the Andaz Beach House is also an option. The price is $120 and your massage can be booked once you arrive at the Beach House.

If you don’t want to trek over to the Beach House, there are 2 beaches located at the resort – Sombrero Oscuro Beach and Sombrero Claro Beach.

Sombrero Oscuro Beach is the closest and can be accessed via the stairs near Rio Bhongo. Oscuro Beach has towels, sunscreen, bug spray, and lounge chairs available. In addition, snorkeling gear is also available.

Sombrero Claro Beach is further down the property and has no available amenities (meaning no towels or chairs), so you’ll want to grab a towel before heading over. Claro Beach is the more secluded of the beach options. Please note that “public nudity” on beaches in Costa Rica is technically illegal. So if you go to Claro Beach and disrobe, know that there is the potential of being fined by the Costa Rican Coast Guard if they spot you from Culebra Bay.

Check in on Sunday, June 5 is at 3pm. Rooms will not be ready until that time. If you arrive earlier, you will be able to check your bags and use the resort’s facilities (for example, the pool), but included food and drinks won’t begin until 3pm on June 5.

To check in, you will need your passport, your Covid vaccination record (physical card, photo of card, or eRecord), and a credit card for incidentals. If you check your bags with the resort’s porters, be sure you keep these items with you in your handheld luggage.

All guests must be checked out of their rooms by 12pm on June 12. You’ll receive your transfer time directly from Amstar, who’ll have a desk set up in the lobby each day.

To get your luggage from your room to the lobby, you’ll leave it outside your room at least 60 minutes before your transfer time. We also recommend calling the Front Desk once you put your bags out to let them know they’ve been placed outside. Although the resort has a complete list of all the transfer times and will be tracking everyone’s movement on this day carefully, this extra Front Desk notification will ensure the bags are picked up.

Of course you’re free to carry your own bags from your room to the lobby to catch your transfer, but remember that the walk is uphill/downhill.

Before you board your transfer vehicle, be sure to identify your bags and watch them be placed in your vehicle. This extra bit of care will ensure all your bags make it onto your vehicle. You don’t want to arrive at LIR Airport only to realize one of your bags is still at the resort. It’s a 30-minute drive from the resort to the airport.

Andaz is currently in the process of expanding their property, adding luxury residences on a third road above the main resort. Construction noise during our stay should be at a minimum.

If you fall in love with Andaz as much as we have, there are ownership opportunities with the new residences and you can read all about that and set up a showing, if you’re interested, HERE.

As expected as we emerge from the pandemic, Costa Rica has eased its entry requirements.

Visitors are no longer required to show a negative Covid test or quarantine upon entry. That being said, it’s still a requirement that all VACAYA guests be fully vaccinated, including booster(s), if eligible.

You can read all the latest HERE.

If you’re flying home on June 12 and need a Covid test to do so, Covid testing will be available at the resort on June 11. As we get closer to our event and have a better understanding of the testing requirements that will likely be in place in mid-June (we expect testing requirements to be dropped by many nations soon, but we’ll be prepared either way), we’ll provide additional information. Because of the quickly changing requirements, that additional information may come at the resort, but rest assured there will be no issue getting tested at the resort if it’s still required at that time.

Testing will be done during a fixed window of time on Saturday, June 11 (times still TBD). As of late April, the cost of the certified antigen tests are around $70 USD and PCR tests around $120 USD per person, but prices are subject to change. If you’re planning to be on a long excursion on June 11 and are likely to miss the testing window, you have a couple additional options: test at LIR Airport on June 12 before your flight (info can be found HERE) or…

If you’re looking for a convenient option that costs substantially less, The Vacayans have first-hand experience that the online proctored BinaxNOW tests are a great option. Those can be purchased in a 2-pack for $69.99 HERE. You’d need to purchase that test in advance and carry it with you to Andaz in order to execute the test on your own June 11 (or whatever day you may need to test before returning home). For the proctored self test, you have to download an app, register your test, and connect to the proctoring service via your phone’s camera. In total, it takes less than 30 minutes to register, self test, and get your results.

A full detailed schedule of each day’s events will be posted here approximately 2 weeks before our adventure together.

RIO BHONGO lies at the very heart of Andaz – near the main pool and at the crossroads of the resort’s various buildings. Rio Bhongo’s expert barista offers an extensive coffee program that will wake you up in the morning, continental and local favorites that will comfort you throughout the day, and elevated Costa Rican cuisine that will delight you for dinner.

Rio Bhongo features an extensive buffet for all meals, with daily specials offered via menu on a rotating basis. Breakfast is served at Rio Bhongo from 6:30-10:30am, Lunch from 11am-5pm, and Dinner from 6-10pm.

VW POOLSIDE BAR is an Instagram-worthy Volkswagen Kombi van turned into a poolside bar situated at the main pool deck. Featuring refreshing cocktails including the Corrado (bourbon, passion fruit, lime, egg white, blackberry syrup), Sangria Andaz (red wine, Licor 43, passion fruit, orange, Fanta, vanilla syrup) and Coco Loco (tequila, Malibu rum, lime, coconut cream). Open daily.

ANDAZ BEACH HOUSE offers ocean views and an authentic, local beach house vibe await. The Andaz Beach House is hidden amongst the forest featuring vibrant beach furnishings, colorful signage, and murals throughout. This casual lunch restaurant and rustic beach getaway is set on Nacascolo Beach adjacent to the Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course, just 15 minutes from the resort. Simple and sumptuous, the menu offers locally inspired favorites such as salads, tacos, wraps, burgers, and kebabs prepared on the chef’s outdoor grill giving you the opportunity to have all eyes on the chef.

Local beers, tropical drinks, fresh juices, and non-alcoholic beverages are available as well. Food and beverage service is offered in the Beach House and at each beachside lounge seat. The Andaz Beach House Restaurant is open from 10am-5pm daily.

OSTRA is an intimate and romantic space, inviting for quiet conversations and celebratory dinners.  The menu focuses on seafood and Ostra is renowned for its ceviche. Ostra is open for Dinner from 6-10pm. Reservations required, but walk-in service is sometimes available if there are no-shows.

OSTRA POOL offers beverages from 10:30am-5pm.

CHAO PESCAO TAPAS BAR is designed for sampling the chef’s seasonal gourmet creations. Chao Pescao offers open terraces, tall wooden ceilings, and a warm and lively atmosphere to effectively capture the heart of Costa Rica. Indulge in a tapas menu – featuring roasted sausages, octopus, Costa Rican chicharrones, and Colombian arepas. Sip on seasonal cocktails from the restaurant’s mixologist team of three at this Costa Rica bar. The beverage list features Central American liquors and Costa Rican craft beers. Chao Pescao is open for Dinner from 6-10pm and seating is on a first come, first served basis. Chao Pescao Bar is open from 4-10:30pm. Chao Pescao will be closed for dinner on the evenings of June 5 and June 8.

THE PATIO LOUNGE – Each night after the show, there will be an assortment of snacks available to you. Instead of waiting for late-night room service, we encourage you to have a little nosh before heading back to your room.

EAT IN (room service) is available 24×7. There is a $7 delivery fee, charged to your resort account, for room service orders. If you’d like to order breakfast for the following day, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND calling in the order the night before. That way, you can determine the exact time for delivery. If you wait until morning of to order room service breakfast, the delivery wait time can be up to 90 minutes as same-day demands dictate.

IN-ROOM MINIBAR – Each room’s minibar will be restocked daily with water, sodas, 4 local beers, and snacks.

INCLUDED DRINKS (from 10:30am-11:30pm*)

While always subject to change, of course, the following list offers an example of the alcohols available to you: Local & International Beers, Stolichnaya Vodka, Titos Vodka, Johnnie Black Label, Jack Daniels, Tanqueray 10 Years, Bombay Sapphire, Cacique Superior, Flor de Caña 4 Years, Centenario 7 Years, Flor de Caña 7 Years, Jose Cuervo Reposado, Jose Cuervo Black, Campari, Bardinet Amareto, Bardinet Triple Sec, Vermouth Rosso, Café Rica, and House White, Red, Rosé, & Sparkling Wine.

Please note that wines/spirits by the bottle and some ultra premium spirits are charged at menu price.

*Alcoholic beverages can be ordered outside of these hours, but are at menu price. Complimentary Mimosas and Bloody Marys are offered with breakfast.

Dinner Reservations for Ostra are available to VACAYA Breeze guests in advance and to all other guests once at the resort. Ostra reservations can be made at the Concierge Desk from 6am-9pm throughout the week. Rio Bhongo and Chao Pescao are your walk-in dining options and seating is on a first come, first served basis. Peak dining times are between 7-8pm, so a short wait to be seated should be expected.

Booking excursions through our partner Amstar can be done HERE. Please note there are TWO pages of excursions from which to choose. Also, the departure times for each excursion can be found on the dropdown menu on the purchase page. Based on sales to date, all excursions offered should be exclusive to VACAYA guests.

Without question, Costa Rica is the STAR of this trip! We highly encourage you to make the most of each and every adventure-filled day. While you can certainly hang out at the resort’s beautiful pool day in and day out, it would be a crime to miss out on all the natural beauty Costa Rica offers in the nearby rainforests. So get out there and enjoy this amazing place! The Vacayans will be waiting for you when you get back. ❤️

A General Note about Excursions on this and every trip (posted March 22, but still great to always keep in mind): Each tour has a minimum number of participants that must be met. If the minimum is not met, the tour operator will attempt to fill the remaining spots with guests from other resorts to get to that minimum. If, through those efforts, the minimum is still not met, the tour will be cancelled and any money paid refunded. Luckily, VACAYA guests are an adventurous bunch and we almost always meet the minimums (oftentimes hitting the maximum), which makes the tour exclusive to VACAYA. Each tour also has a maximum, which is why we offer the same tour on different days – giving our guests options as to when they can have that specific experience. We understand some of our guests would prefer an “exclusive to VACAYA” experience and we offer that when possible, but exclusivity comes at a higher price and with more limited options. The Vacayans always weigh this incredibly complex equation when exploring tour options with each local Destination Management Company (or DMC).

While the majority of our guests are gay men, it’s important to remember that we are not an all-gay all-male company. VACAYA is built for the entire LGBTQIAPK community and our straight allied friends, and we welcome interaction with others.

The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo is an 18 hole, par-72 Arnold Palmer course offering breathtaking water views from 14 of 18 holes. Ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 courses outside of the United States, this course provides exclusive access for guests. Click HERE to learn more.

If you’re planning to experience the various excursions on offer, you’ll want to prepare accordingly with the following essentials:

  • Watershoes/Surf Socks/Old Tennis Shoes
  • Old Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy
  • An Older Swimsuit (again… think mud)
  • A Hat
  • Insect Repellent

If you’re heading into the rainforests, YOU WILL GET WET. So a poncho or rain gear is a great idea.

You might also want to pack a good set of earplugs. Those howler monkeys start howling early!

Monkeys are all around us at the resort. Here are a few tips to ensure your (and their) safety and well being:

  • Don’t leave ANYTHING on your balcony. Ever. Just don’t. It WILL disappear.
  • Never leave your front door or your balcony door open. If a monkey sees it open, they WILL come in and explore – leaving only havoc in their wake.
  • We know you’ll want to feed the monkeys because they’re so cute, but don’t. Feeding them only conditions them to get ever closer to humans.
  • Never ever ever try to touch the monkeys. These are wild creatures and they WILL bite. Assuming they’re not getting into any mischief, just let them continue on with their journey. If mischief ensues, please contact the Front Desk.

Andaz does NOT offer any official motorized water crafts. Local vendors with jet skis do, however, sometimes offer their services on the resort’s public beaches. Please note, though, that these offerings are noisy AND cause damage to the nearby marine life. So while the choice to rent a jet ski is a personal one, we don’t recommend doing so with these particular uninsured operators.

The 11,000-square-foot ONDA Spa is nestled deep in the back of the resort amongst the jungle and it houses nine lavish treatment rooms, including four couple’s treatment rooms. ONDA Spa offers an extensive spa menu of treatments, beautifications, and customized programs such as massages, body scrubs and wraps, facial therapies, manicures, pedicures, and waxing.

Explore ONDA Spa’s menu of services HERE.

VACAYA Breeze and Suite Guests have received advance booking instructions via email. Non-Breeze guests will book their spa services once at the resort.

Breaking the mold yet again, VACAYA is offering a 2-night extension to your Costa Rican adventure that redefines what’s possible. We’ll take care of EVERYTHING – transportation, dinner, drinks (chiliguaro is our favorite!), entertainment, and gratuities. And the best part? You’ll get the chance to mix and mingle with some of Costa Rica’s most prominent LGBT+ citizens and business owners, who are all super eager to break bread with us!
  • Sunday, June 5 – Air-conditioned Motorcoach Transfer from Hilton Garden Inn to Andaz Peninsula Papagayo. The beautiful drive through the Costa Rican countryside takes approximately 5 hours and will have a lunch stop at the midway point. Lunch, gratuities, and beer & water onboard the coach are included.
  • Covid 19 Insurance. This insurance is required of all tourists coming into Costa Rica. The insurance covers $2,000 USD Accommodations for 14 days and $50,000 USD for hospitalization, if needed.

How should I book my flights if I’m participating in this pre-event add-on?

You’ll fly into San Jose Airport (SJO) June 3, 2022. Your return flight will be from Liberia Airport (LIR) on June 12, 2022.* LIR Airport is approximately 30 minutes from Andaz.

Remember, we offer discounts with various airlines when booking through VACAYA. Visit our AIRLINE DISCOUNTS page for details and booking instructions/ links.

If you’d prefer to book your roundtrip long-haul flights in and out of San Jose Airport (SJO), there are multiple 50-minute-long LIR to SJO flights available each morning and they are very reasonably priced on Costa Rica’s Sansa Airlines. So if you book this add-on and want your long-haul flights both in/out of San Jose, you’d book the following:

  • Roundtrip flight from your home airport into San Jose (SJO) June 3, 2022 with a return from San Jose (SJO) to your home airport the afternoon of June 12, 2022*
  • One-way flight from Liberia (LIR) to San Jose (SJO) the morning of June 12, 2022*

The price for this incredible add-on Costa Rican Town & Country Adventure is 997 USD per person for double occupancy and 1397 USD for solo occupancy.

It’s 120 Days before our Costa Rica adventure together, so it’s time to announce our party themes!

@ CHAO PESCAO (off the lower road just past Bldg 7, moving away from the Main Pool)

Our signature Night One cocktail party brings all of our guests together for the very first time. This is your chance to meet, mix, and mingle with fellow travelers. Wear a little somethin’ somethin’ to let us know where you’re from. And since it’s Pride Month, kick it up a notch or two with the beautiful colors of our rainbow. Happy Pride!

This is a true Open House event. Come when you’re finished with dinner OR fill your belly with delicious Chao Pescao bites, which will be on offer from 7:30-10pm.

We’re surrounded by monkeys! Run! Run! The rainforests of Costa Rica inspire this fun and silly V-Dance* tribute to all of Costa Rica’s native creatures.

Scout it out from the rooftops! We’re going full on Meatballs for this party! Think 80s summer camp or 80s summer “camp.”

Costa Rica may really be the “coast of riches.” According to legend, booty is scattered about – buried in the sands of this bountiful pirate haven. Gold drips from its lush forests and that gold inspires today’s V-Dance! Summon your inner chief Orontes and let this golden celebration begin!

The VACAYA Oasis Letter V-Dance continues, this time with the letter “J.” The jaw-dropping jocularity of this jovial jaunt through the jungle ain’t no joke! Or is it? Throw on those jolly jailhouse jellyfish jewels and join us for our final V-Dance of the week, you jester you.

Of course costumes are never required, but they certainly add to the fun. As you start to plan your costumes, keep in mind that it’s hot and humid both day and night. This trip is truly all about the destination, so although our parties will be fewer in number, they’ll still be loads and loads of fun.

*For VACAYA newbies, a “V-Dance” is our twist on the classic afternoon T-Dance.

To best navigate the resort, think in terms of there being an Upper Road and a Lower Road. The Upper Road is where the Lobby, the Theater, the Patio Lounge, the Spa, and Buildings 1, 2, 3, & 4 are located. The Lower Road is where Chao Pescao, Rio Bhongo & the Main Pool, Ostra & the Ostra Pool, and Buildings 5, 6, & 7 are located.

There are 3 ways to get from the Upper Road to the Lower Road (or vice versa):

  1. The connector road between Building 1 and the Lobby
  2. The stairs between Buildings 2 & 3 on the Upper Road and between Rio Bhongo & Building 6 on the Lower Road.
  3. The forest path between the Onda Spa & Building 4 on the Upper Road and Ostra Restaurant & Pool on the Lower Road.

While mask requirements continue to evolve quickly, we encourage everyone to simply have a mask in your pocket at all times while traveling so you can quickly put it on as situations warrant.

Most airlines have dropped the masking requirement altogether, but masks are still required in both SJO and LIR Airports. So even though you may not have to wear one on your flight to Costa Rica, you will have to put a mask on to navigate the airports here.

In addition, you’ll need to wear your mask while inside your transfer vehicle from the airports to the hotel/resort and in the excursion vehicles.

You do NOT have to wear a mask around the resort, but if you’re going to have extended time in close face-to-face proximity with any resort employees, we ask that you pull out your mask and throw it on. Most resort spaces are outside or have great air flow with no side walls. The one exception to this open-air utopia is the Studio 1 Theater, which is enclosed. If you’d like to wear a mask in this space to protect yourself, other guests, and our performers, we encourage and welcome that choice. VACAYA staff members will be wearing masks inside the theater.

Because of its privileged location in a protected nature preserve, Andaz is required by law to be a non-smoking resort. Smoking is not allowed in rooms, on verandas/patios, or in any public spaces.

Smokers can smoke on the beach, however. We just ask smokers to be considerate of non-smokers in the vicinity.

Andaz is built on an undulating hillside. Each building’s position on the hillside varies, but “street level” is always on Floor 2 in all 7 of Andaz’s buildings. Each building also has a ramp from street level to Floor 2.

The buildings do not have elevators, so when you enter on Floor 2, you’ll go one flight of stairs up if your room is on Floor 3 and one flight down if your room is on Floor 1. If you have mobility issues and are not on “street level,” please let The Vacayans know and we’ll do our best to find you alternative accommodations.

How do I know what building I’m in and what floor I’m on?
Each room number has 3 digits. The first digit is your building number. The second digit is your floor number. The third digit is your room number.

The Patio Lounge is your pre- and post-show hangout zone – a place to mix and mingle with fellow guests and grab a drink or two before or after our shows. On June 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 (our show nights), The Patio Lounge will be open from 8:30pm to 11:30pm, with showtime in the nearby Studio 1 Theater at 9:30pm.

The Patio Lounge will feature basic bar service. If you’d like more elaborate blended or muddled drinks, we recommend grabbing a drink at either Rio Bhongo Bar or Chao Pescao Bar before heading over. After the show and in addition to bar service, light snacks will also be available at The Patio Lounge. In order to reduce late-night room service orders (room service is available 24×7, but late night orders always have longer wait times), we encourage you to have a little nosh here at The Patio Lounge before heading back to your room.

If you’re participating in our pre-event San Jose add-on, we need to collect your June 3 flight arrival info into SJO Airport. As a reminder, your transfer from SJO Airport to our hotel is included in your package (if you’re flying into San Jose on a day other than June 3, you will be responsible for getting yourself to our hotel on the 3rd). To provide VACAYA with your arrival flight information, please follow these instructions:

  • Log in to MY TRIPS on the VACAYA website.
  • Find your 2022 ANDAZ COSTA RICA reservation.
  • Click the pink ENTER FLIGHT INFO button.
  • The Arrival Date defaults to 06/05/2022. Please change this date to 06/03/2022 (the date your transfer from SJO to our host hotel is included).
  • For Arrival Flight info, enter the information for the FINAL LEG of your June 3 flight into San Jose, Costa Rica.
  • You can ignore the RESERVATION CODE field altogether; we do not need this info.
  • DO NOT PUT ANY INFO INTO THE DEPARTURE FLIGHT INFORMATION SECTION. Departure Flight Information will not be communicated to Amstar. If you’re purchasing an Amstar transfer from Andaz to LIR Airport on June 12, you’ll provide this departure flight information when booking your one-way departure transfer directly from Amstar.
  • If you’re traveling solo, click CONTINUE. If you’re traveling with someone, click NEXT GUEST and put in their arrival flight information, as well. Then click CONTINUE.

That’s all you have to do to successfully provide VACAYA with your June 3 arrival flight details for San Jose.

For transfers from Andaz to LIR Airport on June 12, you can simply purchase a One Way Transfer from Amstar using the link just above. You’ll select “One Way Transfer” from the dropdown on the Amstar site.

It’s HOT! Summer in Costa Rica is hot and sticky (but not as hot and sticky as it is in March and April, so rejoice!). Average high temperatures during the day are around 90° Fahrenheit/32.2° Celsius. At night, expect lows around 75° Fahrenheit/23.8° Celsius.

Humidity is high and you should expect to be moist. Shorts and Ts are acceptable both day and night throughout the resort.

Daily thunderstorms are the norm, but they’re more like Florida’s 3pm afternoon showers – typically they come and go in 15-20 minutes.

Those constant high-pitched whirring sounds and deep “bonks” you hear in the early evening are the countless tree frogs that call Peninsula Papagayo home. The sound is most intense just after sunset as the male frogs begin their mating calls.

That deep bellow you hear echoing through the trees comes from the howler monkeys communicating with each other. These conversations are most intense about an hour before sunrise.

Complimentary WiFi is available in all rooms and public spaces.

You can also make complimentary local calls from your in-room telephone.
